Last week, multinational technology company Cisco unveiled its latest venture: a Cybersecurity Technology Experience Centre at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. This new centre, established in partnership with the Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) and the University of Nairobi, aims to bolster Kenya's cyber defense capabilities through skills programs and training provided by the Cisco Networking Academy.
Part of Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) programme in Kenya, the initiative seeks to enhance employability and foster growth in the digital economy. The centre, situated within the University of Nairobi, will serve as a hub for customers and partners to delve into cybersecurity solutions, leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR).
During the launch event, Francine Katsoudas, Executive Vice President and Chief People, Policy, and Purpose Officer at Cisco, emphasized the importance of equipping communities with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving landscape of AI and cyber threats. Katsoudas remarked, “This partnership between CDA and Cisco Networking Academy allows us to equip more people with the skills needed for the future and strengthen the country’s cyber defenses.”
The initiative comes at a crucial time, as documented by the Communications Authority of Kenya, which noted a significant rise in cyber attacks in 2023. Stanley Kamanguya, CEO of ICTA, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the urgent need for investments to fortify cyber defenses amid escalating threats. Kamanguya stated, “We are proud to collaborate with technology leaders like Cisco to support our efforts in building a secure digital economy.”
Engineer John Tanui, Principal Secretary of the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, announced the government’s plans to establish a dedicated agency for cybersecurity, highlighting the significance of initiatives like the Cisco Centre in addressing cybercrime.
Shain Rahim, Country Leader for Cisco Kenya, underscored the importance of collaboration in safeguarding Kenya's digital infrastructure and advancing its digital transformation. Rahim stated, “Protecting citizens against cybercrime requires collaboration. Cisco and ICTA invite government, educational institutions, private sector organizations, and entities committed to Kenya's cybersecurity infrastructure and digital transformation to engage in this landmark initiative.”
