The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has opened applications for cohort 2 of the Coursera Scholarship.

The applications, which open on Wednesday, 31st May are expected to close on Wednesday, 14th June, 2023. The Cohort 2 training starts on Monday, 19th June 2023 for a period of 6 months.

According to the agency, the scholarship for digital skills training is part of the Federal Government's commitment to creating 1 million jobs in the digital economy.  It added that the training offers Nigerians the opportunity to build capacity that can provide them with skills for digital jobs.

NITDA/Coursera partnership

Explaining the program, NITDA said it partnered with Coursera to offer learning scholarships that will enable Nigerian citizens to obtain professional certifications from some of the world's leading multinational tech companies, which include Meta, Google, IBM, and other top-ranked US universities.

The certification program, NITDA said, is in two categories from which applicants are to select their preference.

  • “Category A (IT Career Pathway) offers a total of 19 professional certification programs to help you kickstart a successful IT career. Each program comprises a series of related courses focused on providing deep knowledge and hands-on skills required for employment. When you complete each individual course within the program, you'll earn a certificate of completion. However, the professional certification will be earned when you have completed all the required courses in the program.
  • “Category B (Complementary Skills Pathway) offers 4 certification programs for you to choose from to complement your IT career skills and sharpen your use of digital productivity tools, entrepreneurship, or freelancing skills,” NITDA explained.

The agency said successful applicants will receive a Coursera license in their provided email in the form of a joining link. They will then be able to join the program and enroll in a course by clicking on that link.

  • “Each scholar will have access to the Coursera license for a period of six (6) months. Scholars are expected to use this time to complete as many professional certifications as possible, but they can only be enrolled in one certification at a time,” NITDA added.
