Huawei Ethiopia hosts Green Energy Summit 2024 in Addis Ababa

Huawei Ethiopia, in a bid to promote sustainable energy solutions, partners with the Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), to organize the Green Energy Summit 2024 in Addis Ababa. The event saw the launch of new green energy technology services and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Huawei and EEU, aiming at strategic collaboration on digital transformation and green energy initiatives.

During the summit, Mr. Liu Jifan, CEO of Huawei Ethiopia, stated that “in the last few years, many African countries, including Ethiopia, have taken amazing initiatives towards environmental challenges.”

“In recent decades, the instability of the electricity system and the significant rise in oil costs in Africa have provided new prospects for solar energy solutions. We are committed to making Ethiopia a greener place with our power electronics and ICT technology,” he remarked.

The CEO explained that Huawei uses its 36 years of experience and global business cooperation to guide its customers and partners through emerging development possibilities. The company’s goal is to contribute to a bright future for solar energy and work with the entire ecosystem to build a better, more sustainable world, he explained.

Ethio – Telecom Chief Technology Officer Mr. Tariku Demissie, in his speech entitled “Leverage Technology for Sustainable, Green Development,” said that Ethiopia has vast renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower. The Ethiopian government has recognized the potential of these resources and has set ambitious goals for renewable energy generation, he added. Tariku pointed out that green energy is not only a source but also requires efficient energy utilization and management systems.

The signing of the MoU between Huawei Digital Power and Ethiopian Electricity Utility aims to promote cooperation and capacity building in the sustainable energy sector. The collaboration seeks to develop and implement sustainable energy solutions, focusing on off-grid alternative electricity services, EV charging stations, and technologies to improve facility operations.

The summit convened government officials from Ethiopian Electric Utility, Ethiopian Electric Power, Petroleum and Energy Authority, and private sector stakeholders. It facilitated discussions on the challenges and opportunities of EV charging and green energy adoption in Ethiopia, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration in renewable energy initiatives.
