Samson Akintaro

Nairametrics News Editor, Samson Akintaro, has been named Tech Editor of the Year at the 2025 edition of the Tech Innovation Awards, an annual event widely regarded as one of Africa’s most respected recognitions for excellence in technology leadership and innovation.

The award was presented on November 29 at a ceremony held in Lagos, drawing senior executives, regulators, innovators, and industry stakeholders from across Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

Akintaro’s recognition places him among the continent’s leading voices shaping public understanding of digital transformation, fintech growth, and the broader ICT landscape.

For Nairametrics, the award marks another milestone in the platform’s continued investment in high-quality business and technology journalism. The publication’s coverage spans markets, finance, regulation, startups, and enterprise innovation, supported by data-driven analysis and industry insights.

Celebrating excellence in Africa’s tech ecosystem

Now in its ninth year, the Tech Innovation Awards (TIA) has evolved into a major platform spotlighting individuals and organisations driving digital advancement across Africa.

  • Often described as the “Oscars of the ICT industry,” the Awards acknowledge the impact of technology on business competitiveness, public-sector efficiency, and socio-economic development.
  • From digital payments to enterprise solutions, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, and policy evolution, TIA focuses on how innovation is transforming daily life and enabling new opportunities for growth.
  • The annual event also serves as a networking ground for leaders shaping Africa’s tech future.

Industry leaders highlight the awards’ significance

Speaking during the ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of InstinctWave, Akin Naphtal, said the platform was designed from the outset to recognise the individuals building Africa’s digital backbone.

“These awards celebrate the pioneers, creators, and innovators who are shaping the future of technology on the continent,” he said.

“Tonight, we celebrate not only innovation, but courage, digital excellence, and visionaries whose ideas are transforming how we live, work, transact, and connect,” he added.

Naphtal noted that TIA’s strength lies in its ability to evolve with industry trends, introducing new categories that reflect ongoing technological shifts. One of the more recent additions is the digital and digital payments category, which he said was inspired by the rapid rise of Africa’s fintech ecosystem.

“Fintech is not just an industry; it is a movement. And that’s why we are part of the ecosystem,” he said.

Organisers emphasised that TIA has grown beyond an award event. It now functions as a reference point for digital excellence and a community that spotlights the continent’s evolving innovation landscape.

Winners across categories often include technology CEOs, product leaders, ICT regulators, digital transformation executives, and top media professionals whose work strengthens Africa’s digital knowledge base.
