Global digital infrastructure company, Equinix, Inc., has announced plans to open a new high-performance data center in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of a broader investment strategy aimed at expanding its footprint across Africa.
The company said the facility, named LG3, represents the first phase of a $100 million investment plan targeted at strengthening Africa’s digital infrastructure over the next two years.
The Lagos site, expected to open in the first quarter of 2026, will add new capacity to Nigeria’s growing data ecosystem and provide local and international businesses with access to advanced connectivity and cloud solutions.
Incorporation with Equinix Fabric
According to Equinix, the LG3 data center will incorporate Equinix Fabric, a platform that enables companies to securely connect their physical and virtual infrastructure to global cloud service providers and partners. This feature is expected to enhance cross-border digital integration, linking Nigeria’s business ecosystem to other Equinix locations around the world.
Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix, Wole Abu, said the new facility represents a step forward in the company’s long-term expansion in Africa, while noting Lagos’ role as a hub for innovation and connectivity.
Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa’s second-largest economy, has continued to attract global interest in its digital infrastructure as demand for data storage, cloud computing, and internet services rises.
Lagos, which is home to a growing number of tech startups and digital service providers, was recently recognized as the only African city in the Global Top 100 Startup Ecosystems.
Equinix Africa investments
Equinix’s new investment builds on its growing presence across Africa. Since entering the market in 2022, the company has expanded operations in Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire, and opened its first South African data center in Johannesburg last year.
These moves are part of Equinix’s strategy to strengthen its global network of over 270 data centers and enhance interconnection between African economies and international markets.
The company also highlighted its commitment to sustainable operations, stating that its facilities, including the upcoming LG3, are designed to minimize environmental impact and improve energy efficiency.
Equinix in 2022 acquired Equinix acquired Funke Opeke’s MainOne in a $320 million deal that marked Equinix's entry into the African market.
The acquisition provided Equinix with MainOne's data center and connectivity infrastructure, and the integration has since been completed.
