Spotify partners with top record labels to develop “responsible AI” tools for artists

Spotify

Spotify has announced new partnerships with major record labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Merlin to develop artificial intelligence (AI) products that prioritize fair compensation and give artists more control over how their work is used.

The music streaming giant said on Thursday that the collaboration would focus on creating “responsible AI” tools that respect copyright and ensure that artists and songwriters remain at the center of innovation. The deal also includes provisions allowing artists to decide whether to opt in or out of AI-generated music tools.

Although Spotify did not disclose details of how the new tools will function, the company already offers several AI-powered experiences, including its popular AI DJ, which curates personalized song selections, and AI-generated playlists that respond to user prompts.

Tackling copyright and AI misuse

Spotify’s move follows growing criticism over the rise of AI-generated music on streaming platforms. Earlier this year, the company faced backlash after an AI-created band’s tracks went viral, sparking debates about the role of human creativity in the future of music.

In response, Spotify updated its AI policy last month to curb misuse of generative technology. The company said it would crack down on mass uploads of AI content, duplicate songs, and manipulation of search and recommendation systems. It also adopted the DDEX labeling standard to indicate when AI tools were involved in music production.

The new AI system is expected to allow artists to identify when their songs are used to train or generate AI-created tracks and receive compensation accordingly. Spotify noted that the framework would eventually include rights holders, distributors, and other industry players.

“Musicians’ rights matter”

“Some voices in the tech industry believe copyright should be abolished. We don’t. Musicians’ rights matter. Copyright is essential,” Spotify said in a statement. “If the music industry doesn’t lead in this moment, AI-powered innovation will happen elsewhere, without rights, consent, or compensation.”

Spotify also revealed it is setting up a generative AI research lab and product team to develop technologies aligned with its principles of artist choice and consent in the AI music ecosystem. The company said work on the first batch of products is already underway, with more tools expected soon.
