The Zimbabwean Cabinet has approved the Broadcasting Services Amendment Bill, which is set to free public media from any interference by the state, reports the country's media outfit, New Zimbabwe. The proposed amendments seek to establish the Broadcasting and Communication Authority by merging the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) and Postal Telecommunication Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the law seeks to harmonise the Broadcasting Services Act with the constitution.
She said the Freedom of Information Bill, which aims to repeal the infamous Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, was also approved. The principles of the proposed Bill provides that every person has the right to freedom of expression and freedom of the media, and that the freedom to establish broadcasting and other electronic media of communication is subject only to state licensing procedures.
